About
The Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) is
a national research organisation. The partners for CHARISMA are two
The Laboratory of the Centre of Research and Restoration of the French Museums, located in the basement of the Louvre Museum, plays a key role in France for the study and conservation-restoration of the artefacts kept in museums and belongs to the Ministry of Culture and is associated through the UMR 171 to the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS). C2RMF is headed by Christiane Naffah, General Curator of Cultural Heritage.
Its missions are the implementation, with the curators in charge of collections, of the "Direction des musées de France" policies in regards to research, preventive conservation and restoration. It collects and conserves documentation about materials, techniques and restoration of museum's works of art. It includes the management of the laboratories and the restoration workshop. Lastly, it takes part in the technical and scientific inspection of the public collections.
The research at the LC2RMF is the application of materials science for the analysis of the materials and the techniques of works of art; the Research Department has a large number of analytical facilities such as optical microscopy, SEM, ICP-AES, XRF, surface microtopography, IBA techniques, X-ray diffraction, organic chemistry, mass spectrometry, infrared spectrometry, gas chromatography, TL dating, C14 dating with AMS (etc.). as well as the facilities on the particle accelerator AGLAE (Accélérateur Grand Louvre pour l'Analyse Élémentaire) entirely dedicated to cultural heritage.
Laboratoire d'Optique Atmosphérique
The research themes at CNRS-LOA cover a large scientific spectrum centered on ultrashort and ultrahigh-peak-power light pulses produced by femtosecond lasers (1 femtosecond = 10-15 s).
Relevant experience and role
The Centre de Recherche et de Restauration des Musées de
France (C2RMF) is the national research centre in France
responsible for the documentation, conservation and restoration of
the items held in the collections of more than 1,200 museums across
France. C2RMF also carries out extensive scientific studies and
data recording for these collections, and is active both nationally
and internationally in the field of cultural heritage conservation
and analysis. The C2RMF is involved in the development of
technologies and scientific procedures employed in the preservation
of art works and artefacts, both on its own and in partnership with
other museums and research institutions across the globe.
CNRS-LC2RMF have the responsibility of the transnational access programmes ARCHILAB and FIXLAB and participates to MOLAB. It is also involved in the outreach programs - in particular, in the definition of best practices principles and protocols - as well as in the research activities related to the creation of a portal to cultural heritage knowledge and the development of new portable instrumentation and innovative methodologies for in-situ diagnostics and conservation.
CNRS-LOA participates exclusively to the development of the research project "New portable instrumentation and methodologies".
