International Workshop organised by: Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, CHARISMA Project
Place:  Roma, IT
Address:  Auditorium of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, Via della Lungara, 230 Roma, IT

FarnesinaThe International Workshop on Diagnostics at the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, intends, in the framework of the International Year of Chemistry 2011, to represent a forum for researchers and practitioners from academia, industry, and government involved toward  more successful and long-lasting conservation and protection of cultural heritage. As a Foresight Event of the FP7 CHARISMA project, the Workshop aims to spread the knowledge on the most recent achievements in analytical technologies and diffuse the practice of exploitation of novel techniques.
Significant advances have been done in recent years in diagnostics applied to the study and conservation of cultural heritage, thanks to developments of innovative micro-analytical techniques, the  availability of new optical fibers transparent to radiations in a wide range of wavelength, the development of micro-and nano-electronics that permitted to enhance performances and reduce the dimensions of electronic devices, the application of nanoscience to conservation problems, the development of new devices for high resolution imaging and accurate sensing, or the exploitation of  computational modelling.
These progresses opened new ways for a better understanding of causes and mechanisms of alteration processes, for  finding optimal solutions in early stage identification of  degradations,  for improving the efficacy, safety and durability of  conservation interventions, or for introducing innovations in monitoring of inorganic and organic materials to prevent damages.

After the second day conclusions, in the presence of the public and press, a demonstration of diagnostic non-invasive investigations, will be directly carried out on the fresco Il trionfo di Galatea by Raphael and Polifemo by Sebastiano del Piombo at the Galatea Hall of the Villa Farnesina alla Lungara, on paintings from the Galleria Corsini and on illuminated manuscripts from the Academy's Library. The portable spectroscopic techniques used in the measurements are those available in the Mobile Laboratory, MOLAB, European infrastructure of the FP7 CHARISMA project (X-ray fluorescence, mid and near FT-IR, micro-Raman, UV-Vis absorption and emission, NMR-Mouse depth-profiler, IR multispectral imaging, XRD), integrated with those of the Laboratorio di Diagnostica, Spoleto.
