About
Central task of the Doerner Institut is the preservation andart-technological research of the extensive painting collections of the Munich Pinakotheken administered by the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen , which comprise more than 25.000 objects ranging from the 14th century to contemporary art. The close cooperation of conservators, scientists, engineers and museum technicians enables multidisciplinary research into the painting technique of specific artists and schools, analyses on historic and modern painting materials as well as their ageing behaviour, topics related to conservation science, the application of imaging techniques on art objects or studies of historical documentary sources. The results of these research activities are stored in an archive comprising images, analytical data and technical reports.  Regular participation of the Doerner Institut in the Pinakotheken  exhibitions promotes the public`s involvement in the conservation, art-technological examination and understanding of cultural heritage.

Relevant experience and role
The Doerner Institut today uses the following imaging and analytical methods: X-radiography, digital infrared reflectography (VASARI scanner), Scanning electron microscopy / energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis, X-ray powder diffraction, gas chromatography / mass spectrometry, amino acid analysis, Fourier-transform infrared microscopy and High Performance Liquid Chromatography. Innovative non-destructive methods are applied and further developed in cooperation with other institutions e.g. in the field of Synchrotron micro techniques, Raman microscopy, mobile Micro X-ray  fluorescence spectrometry or neutron autoradiography. The Doerner Institut is affiliated with the conservation chair of the Technical University of Munich and participating in the training and supervision of conservation students and post-graduates. The institute also provides consulting services and expert reports for governmental agencies, freelance conservators, the art market and private individuals.

In CHARISMA DI-BS is both involved in coordination (development of best practices and protocols, Training on spectroscopic techniques) and research activities (development of Innovative methodologies and instrumentation for laboratory research).
