About
The National Research Council (CNR) is a public organization; its duty is to carry out, promote, spread, transfer and improve research activities in the main sectors of knowledge growth and of its applications for the scientific, technological, economic and social development of the Country.
To this end, the activities of the organization are divided into macro areas of interdisciplinary scientific and technological research, concerning several sectors: biotechnology, medicine, materials, environment and land, information and communications, advanced systems of production, judicial and socio-economic sciences, classical studies and arts. CNR is distributed all over Italy through a network of institutes aiming at promoting a wide diffusion of its competences throughout the national territory and at facilitating contacts and cooperation with local firms and organizations. In this project three institutes belonging to CNR will be involved: ICVBC, IFAC and INO.

Relevant experience and role

Institute for Conservation and Promotion of Cultural Heritage, IT (CNR-ICVBC)

LogCNR1The activity focuses on research projects regarding the conservation and promotion of cultural heritage, taking into consideration the historical, artistic, archaeological merits and environmental context.
One of the essential assets of the ICVBC is its multidisciplinary character, promoting an interdisciplinary approach to research, guaranteed not only by the presence of diverse professionals (biologists, chemists, engineers, geologists, physicists, archaeologists, architects, urban historians), but also through the development of an extensive national and international network of collaboration with research institutes, universities and public or private bodies involved in the protection and preservation of cultural property.
In the CHARISMA project ICVBC is involved in Networking Activity being responsible of definition of the principles and establishment of best protocols for sampling, proposing appropriate strategies for selected types of objects, materials or conservation problems.
ICVBC is also involved in two Research Activities respectively on Laser Cleaning and Innovative methodologies and instrumentation for laboratory research.

Institute of Applied Physics “Nello Carrara”, IT (CNR-IFAC)

LogCNR2The main research fields are: Methodologies and applications of electromagnetic waves, optics, quantum electronics, and interactions between radiation and matter; Structure of matter; Applied spectroscopy; Optoelectronics and photonics; Laser and applications; Electromagnetism; Optical Sensors and observation methodologies; Information processing.
The Division “Laser & Applications” will contribute to the project CHARISMA with an established experience in development and application of Laser techniques for the cleaning phase in restoration of artefacts. Working on this problem since 1992, CNR-IFAC has critically reviewed the previous laser approach, implementing the understanding of the physics of the laser-material interaction, selecting suitable laser parameters that avoid side effects as yellowing of stone (determined by previous unsatisfactory tests), and finally demonstrating in crucial examples of problems the ability of laser cleaning where other techniques failed.
The conservation research is performed in strict collaboration with the main conservation institutions, such as the Opificio delle Pietre Dure, Florence, the Archaeological Superintendence of Tuscany and Marches and several National museums of Art and Archaeology, along with a number of national and international research institution, service and artistic handicraft SMEs.
In CHARISMA IFAC is responsible for the overall coordination of networking activities and specifically for and the promotion of Scientific excellence through focused training actions and skills development. IFAC is also responsible for the Joint Research activity on Laser Cleaning.

National Institute of Optics, IT (CNR-INO)

LogCNR3INO’s main fields of activity are: advanced (applied) research, graduate and post-graduate training, certifications and technical inspections. INO’s research interests cover four main areas: Optics and Optoelectronics, Technical Optics, Quantum Optics, Information Processing.
The Gruppo Beni Culturali (Art Diagnostics Group), GBC, of INO studies applications of optical-based techniques as well as the project engineering and realisation of specific tools for non-invasive analysis on relevant historical and artistic works. Since the beginning, the GBC has increased its know-how by collaborating both with affiliates of the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities, as well as Italian and foreign research entities and institutes (the Opificio delle Pietre Dure, the Gallerie dell’Accademia di Venezia, the National Gallery and the Hermitage). Research on optical diagnostic techniques and the applications of the developed methodologies have allowed relevant discoveries in famous masterpieces, among them the Leonardo da Vinci’s Vergine delle Rocce, the Crocifissione of Masaccio, the Tempesta of Giorgione, Fornarina of Raffaello, the Annunciazione of Leonardo, the Minerva of Arezzo. INO is certified as UNI EN ISO 9001:2000.
In the CHARISMA project INO is strongly involved in Research Activities, specifically on New portable instrumentation and innovative methodologies for in situ diagnostics and conservation, being responsible of Near-IR confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), and cooperating to four research tasks on Optical Coherence Tomography, Mobile, single-sided NMR tomography, Combined time-resolved and steady-state fluorimetry and Laser cleaning: new methodologies for in-situ applications). INO is also involved in Transational Access Activities offering access to the Multispectral NIR Scanner under the MOLAB program.
