Société Civile Synchrotron Soleil (SOLEIL), FR

About
The SOLEIL synchrotron is a third generation synchrotron radiation
facility located in the Paris region inaugurated in December 2006.
The machine operation started in 2006-2008, and the first users
worked at the facility in 2008. Several thousands of users already
use the facility each year. In 2010, 17 beamlines are operational
and open to external visiting scientists. This number will reach 27
in 2012-2013. SOLEIL provides the national and European scientific
communities with very high-quality beamlines including visible and
UV spectroscopy, absorption, reflection, X-ray diffraction and
scattering, fluorescence and X-ray imaging, infrared microscopy,
etc.
SOLEIL is an interdisciplinary site, but it is equally an area
for the exchange and dissemination of scientific and technological
information.
Relevant experience and role
The exceptional characteristics (brilliance, stability,
etc) of its synchrotron light allow a considerable advance in the
quality of measurements comparing to those obtained via classical
laboratory sources.
Among other transversal programs, SOLEIL is developing with CNRS, the French ministry of Culture and the Natural History Museum, the IPANEMA European platform that will be fully devoted to ancient materials studies and to the development of novel analytical methodologies. In the CHARISMA project, SOLEIL is one of the facilities of the French platform providing access under the FIXLAB programme. It is also involved in all outreach programs activities: establishment of best practices and protocols toward common standards, organisation of events aimed at promoting the scientific excellence and the coordination of dissemination and communication efforts.
